Transformation. The caterpillar becomes the butterfly. The butterfly comes out of the cocoon, and cannot fly initially. It is very fragile, and must wait for its new wings to dry. It is a time of "pentimento." Soon enough the old is forgiven and transformed with only a shadow, a hint of the old remaining underneath the true beauty that shines forth. And yet, without that time of being in waiting between the old and the new, the butterfly would not survive, and would not spread its wings and fly as it was meant to do.
